Volleyball in Mwanza
Volleyball is the fourth most popular team sport in Tanzania after football, basketball, and netball. Right now volleyball is more popular in Tanzania’s coast regions where many people play beach volleyball. The process of becoming a common club sport in cities and on the countryside is still in the beginning stages of its development. However it has a huge potential. This promising opportunity to make volleyball a more popular and competitive sport is what makes the local volleyball federation so keen to work with us.
Currently the biggest problems are that playing fields are missing and balls are too expensive for the teams. They usually train with one or two balls only which also don’t last long on the rough surfaces. Technical and tactical trainings are not common among the teams.
When we see the enthusiasm among the current teams and the interest of spectators during matches, we are convinced to bring the volleyball passion from the Tanzanian beaches to the city of Mwanza in the upcoming years. More and more teams get created. In the last years also a youth and a women league have been established!
We are looking for Volleyball Ambassadors …
… who support us in building playing grounds
As a charity we want to build three new sports centers every year. Each center will have two volleyball fields. Both fields will get a shady area for players/people watching and are supposed to get lights for night hours. Without lights volleyball could only be played from 4pm (end of school) to 7 pm (sunset). The lights increase the number of training spots which give people of all ages and both genders the chance to train 2-3 times a week.
… who help establishing club structures in Mwanza
We are looking for International volunteers who have experience in playing or coaching. Together with the volleyball federation, the volunteers will train coaches holistically including organizational and pedagogical aspects. They work with clubs during the daily trainings and by organizing special workshops.
Already a small donation can make a big difference. For 30 Euro we can buy a new ball that lasts long on the rough surfaces or they help us to get a step closer in financing the next volleyball ground.
